Using the correct throwing mechanics and pitching delivery is critical to a pitcher’s ability to throw strikes and stay healthy. The explosion of injuries to young pitchers resulting in arm surgeries in record numbers has been found to be linked to a number of factors including: (1) fatigue, (2) overuse, (3) excessive pitch counts and (4) improper mechanics. Most experts agree that there are several critical components that form the basis of a sound delivery. Coach Picard has been involved in amateur baseball for over 35 years and during that time period has been to countless clinics conducted by noted pitching experts such as Bill Thurston(Amherst College), Tom House(NPA), Ron Woolforth(Pitching Central), Derek Johnson(Vanderbilt), Leo Mazzone, Dr. Mike Marshall and many other professional and collegiate coaches. Using data derived from a number of sources particularly the American Sports Medicine Institute headed by noted orthopaedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews these pitching clinics will train the throwing athlete in many facets of pitching including: (1) proper warm up, stretching and cool-down techniques, (2) proper throwing mechanics, (3) the phases of a pitching delivery from beginning to follow thru, (4)throwing grips for the various pitches(off speed will consist of changeups only for young pitchers), (5) holding runners, (6) fielding your position and (7) causes of injury. Pitchers will be videotaped from a variety of angles using a high speed camera in order to enhance their understanding of their delivery. Upon completion of the program each pitcher will be given an analysis of their delivery.

The COMPETITIVE EDGE is introducing a new program this year featuring a more comprehensive approach to what is widely considered to be the most difficult task in sports-“hitting a baseball.” Instead of several hitters lining up and taking multiple swings under the eye of a single instructor in one cage the players will move from station to station and perform a different series of drills-each designed to reinforce a particular hitting concept or fundamental. Each station will be limited to a minimal number of players in order to maximize the number of swing repetitions. While it is critical to limit the number of consecutive swings in order to reduce fatigue it is also beneficial to the player’s development to employ a variety of drills when training hitters.
Many hitters are “cage hitters”-able to hit a baseball because the pitch location, type and speed do not vary. Once confronted with an off-speed pitch or a change of location the player suddenly struggles. Using the Hack Attack as well as occasionally facing live pitching will allow the hitter to face a variety of hitting situations which more closely resemble real world conditions.
Finally, players will be videotaped and have the opportunity to sit down with Nigel and observe their swing in slow motion on a large screen. Each player will be given a “report card” detailing their performance indicating areas of strength and weakness.
